Individual Professional Award in Sustainable Development

School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) – University of London (May 2018 – Sep. 2018)

Definitions and the principles of sustainable development are explained. An account of the emergence and evolution of the concept of sustainable development is also provided in order to explain the historical context of current debates. ‘Mainstream’ notions of sustainable development are outlined together with some of the key strategies that have been devised to promote sustainable development. Various resistances to the concept, and some alternative approaches to sustainable development, are also examined critically. The main ideas presented in this course are illustrated using case studies, including accounts of two major global environmental issues: biodiversity loss and climate change. Overall, this course provides an overview of some of the most important areas of debate and controversy in relation to sustainable development.
